Introduction:
Kandyan dance and yoga asanas for the sacral chakra share a profound connection through fluid movement, hip activation, and rhythmic expression, making them a powerful combination for unlocking creativity, emotions, and sensuality. In various spiritual traditions, the sacral chakra—located in the lower abdomen—is associated with the element of water and governs creativity, emotions, and sensuality. In Sri Lanka, Kandyan dance is a traditional art form characterised by dynamic movements, rhythmic footwork, and expressive gestures. It often incorporates fluid, circular motions that symbolise the natural flow of water within the body, aligning harmoniously with the energy of the sacral chakra.

Tutor Profile:
María Vallejos
María is a movement practitioner and teacher specialising in Kandyan dance from Sri Lanka‚ yoga, and somatic practices. With a background in Political Science and contemporary philosophy, her research explores ritual, the East-West dichotomy, coloniality's impact on traditional dances, and bicultural memory.
She began studying Kandyan dance in 2006 and started teaching in 2017, accumulating over six years of experience. She led workshops and performances to introduce and promote the dance across Chile, and since 2023, she has continued teaching in Australia. Over the past year, María has also integrated yoga into her movement offerings, deepening the embodied and holistic dimension of her teaching.
Her practice is enriched by studies in music and percussion-particularly the Geta Beraya drum-and she has completed teacher training programs in both Sri Lanka and Australia. Now based in Australia, she is developing her own integrative movement technique, centered on the sacrum as the body's axis. Her approach blends rhythm, embodiment, and the cultivation of nourishing mental states.
Influenced by somatic improvisation, Latin dance, and the Indian martial art Kalari, María offers a grounded, cross-cultural approach that fosters deep connection between body, rhythm, and cultural memory.
