Introduction:
Learn the fundamentals of jewellery making in silver such as sawing, filing, soldering, forming and polishing to achieve various textures and finishes. During the workshop, you will also gain an understanding of silver's properties, as well as the equipment and tools used to work with this precious metal.
In class, you will design and make your own jewellery pieces, beginning with a simple silver ring and then making a hand-formed chain bracelet as a subsequent project. You can expect to complete two pieces of finished jewellery.
At the end of this course, you will go home with a foundation of knowledge and skills of basic jewellery making as well as your ready-to-wear silver jewellery pieces.
What to bring
- Pencil, paper and scissors
- $90 to tutor at first class for materials
- Wear closed-in shoes, no loose clothing and tie up long hair
- Bring your own lunch
- A degree of hand strength and steadiness are required in silversmithing

Tutor Profile:
Michelle Walker
Michelle Walker is a visual artist whose 2D and 3D art pieces explore the landscapes we inhabit and the connections they hold in our hearts. Drawing on a creative practice spanning 20 years and an environmental consultancy spanning 25 years, her cross-disciplinary work addresses themes of art/nature/science and humanity’s relationship to the natural world.
Michelle fell in love with jewellery design and silversmithing in 2002 and has had a making studio wherever she has been based since. She has taught jewellery making in the Northern Rivers for more than 10 years with great feedback from her students and regularly teaches introductory and advancing level classes in silversmithing, stone setting and enamelling from her studio, Berrimbillah Studios in Ocean Shores.
Michelle has been the silver jewellery and enamelling tutor for Byron Community College since 2022.
