Introduction:

In this course, we will be 'breaking through' and bridging the gap from confident intermediate player to competent musician. If you're bored with your guitar playing, this course is for you! This course is designed for the intermediate player who wants to advance. To benefit fully from this course you will need to be able to play confidently both open position and barre chords.

Among other things, we will explore new approaches to chords, and different chord 'voicings'; we will explore how chords are built and how to build the chords we need, rather than just memorise random shapes; and we will explore how chord progressions work so we can play any song in any style. We will also further develop our right and left hand skills with some cool expressive techniques.

Tutor Profile:

Karl Farren

Karl is an excellent teacher with over thirty years experience in adult education and training.  His experience ranges from teaching Kung Fu (including self-defence techniques for the visually-impaired) to Shiatsu, bodywork, anatomy, Chinese Medicine theory, guitar and songwriting.

For six years Karl was a senior teacher of Chinese Medicine, Oriental Diagnosis and Shiatsu-Do at the British School of Shiatsu-Do, London.  His duties there included teaching Chinese Medicine theory to the other faculty members. On graduating from the London School of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, he was also invited to join the faculty there. More recently, Karl has taught Chinese Medicine and Shiatsu at The Way College of Oriental Therapies and Bodywork, Byron Bay.

Karl has taught beginner and intermediate guitar for several years at the annual Summersong Music Camp, where he has also led workshops in a capella singing and Irish ‘mouth-music’.  He was invited by the Gold Coast Writers Association to teach a workshop in songwriting, and has also taught songwriting courses and workshops at Byron Shire Community College, Coast Acoustic Music Association and Loose Acoustic Enterprises. For the last five years, Karl has taught the hugely popular ‘Band Lab’ classes at Summersong Music Camp.

At the institutions where he has taught, Karl was directly responsible for curriculum design and writing course materials, as well as delivering both theory and practical sessions.  In addition to delivering lectures and classes, Karl has extensive experience in leading smaller seminars, small-group and individual tutorials, supervising students in clinical practice, and running assessments and examinations.  Karl was a registered Teacher with the Shiatsu Society (UK).  He holds a Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and a Certificate IV in Training Small Groups from NSW Vocational Education and Training Accreditation Board.

Throughout his teaching career, Karl has had consistently excellent feedback from students, faculty members and external assessors.  For students, Karl’s great strengths as a teacher are his enthusiasm, his clarity of presentation, his command of his subject, and his love of teaching.  For the institution there are the added benefits of his experience, his organisational skills and a highly professional attitude.
