This introductory course is designed to ignite your passion and prepare you for your journey of providing compassionate support to individuals navigating mental health challenges.
 
Guided by experienced practitioners, you'll learn to support individuals from diverse backgrounds through loss and grief, build collaborative relationships with those living with mental health challenges, and effectively navigate the complexities of the AOD sector.

Course Duration
  • Intake dates: 11 February 2025
  • The course duration is 8 weeks
  • The weekly workload is 18 hours (classroom and home study combined)

Course Delivery
  • Face-to-face learning delivered at our Byron Bay Campus:  Tuesdays & Wednesdays - 9:00am - 2:30pm
  • Self-paced learning at home: 7 hours per week, including non-supervised assessment tasks
  • Assessments are conducted in a supervised (on-campus) and non-supervised (online) format
 
Units of Study
There are 4 units of competency that will be undertaken during the course, as an introduction to working in the mental health field.
  1. CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people
  2. CHCCCS017 Provide loss and grief support     
  3. CHCAOD001 Work in an alcohol and other drugs context
  4. CHCMHS001 Work with people with mental health issues
Course completion
Following successful completion of this course, you will be awarded with a Statement of Attainment for these units of competency.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.
 
Admission Requirements
When studying with Byron Community College, we want you to succeed. This course involves reading and undertaking a range of written assessments. Entry requirements help us confirm that you’re ready to successfully complete the course and get the most out of your learning experience.

Course Fees
This course is subsidised by the NSW governments Adult and Community Education (ACE) program. You could be eligible for free training under this program.^
 
To be eligible for ACE funding, you must:
  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or humanitarian visa holder, or a New Zealand citizen; and
  • Live or work in New South Wales; and
  • Be aged 15 years or older; and
  • No longer be at school or equivalent; and
  • Provide the College with your USI at the time of enrolment (admin staff can assist you in obtaining a USI)
  • Have not previously completed the units listed under 'Units of Study'.

Fee for service
If you are ineligible for ACE funding, you can obtain information about the fee-for-service cost of this course from Byron Community College.
Course fees are paid in instalments scheduled throughout the duration of the course. Fee schedules for individual courses are outlined on the enrolment paperwork or are available from the college administration team.

USI
From 1 January 2015 all students undertaking accredited training must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This requirement applies to all nationally recognised training, from full qualifications to single-unit courses.

You must provide BRCC with your USI at enrolment. If you don’t already have one, you (or your parent or guardian) can apply for one at http://usi.gov.au/create-your-USI/Pages/default.aspx. You will need to have one form of identification and a valid email address to create your USI.

Alternatively, college staff can assist you to create your USI.

Emma Paul

Emma’s background as a Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Coach, Somatic Therapist, Birth Doula and Buddhist Chaplain provides a diverse foundation from which to share knowledge and teachings related to Mental Health. 
 
Emma is passionate about empowering people on their journey to supporting others through their Mental Health studies and cultivates a safe, nurturing environment, ripe for learning. 
 
Holding a Diploma in Counselling and studying her Masters of Mental Health, Emma weaves her love of learning with her passion of Mental Health and Well-being in a fusion of Academia.
