Introduction:
Experimenting with a range of drawing, painting and printmaking techniques. Investigating composition, mark-making and materiality, you will be guided through working on both small format to large scale compositions.
You do not need prior experience for this course - it is for anyone (from complete beginners to experienced artists) who are inspired by the natural world of plants and flowers and would love nothing more than studio time to delve into focused observation and fun experimentation.
What you will learn
- Contour drawing and shading for volume
- Design and constructing compositions
- Experimenting with mixed media
- Knowledge of significant artists
- Printmaking techniques (relief, monoprint, photo transfer and cyanotype)
What to bring
- You will need to purchase some art materials (e.g. willow charcoal, pencils (2B, 4B, 6B), a drawing pad, acrylic paint, palette, palette knives, scissors, a glue stick). If you don't currently have art supplies, or are uncertain what you may want to work with, the trainer will introduce you to various options at the first class. Students can then choose to buy the supplies they particularly want to use.

Tutor Profile:
Lucia Canuto
Lucia formally trained as a printmaker. Since graduating from the VCA in 2014, her work has expanded through the mediums of screen print, cyanotype, photography and drawing as well as experiments utilising both plant based and synthesised dyes. This process is somehow reminiscent of alchemy.
She is interested in language, translation and archival print materials; mainly newspapers and small publications. Her most recent body of work has been informed by Donna Haraway’s theory of Sympoiesis. That concerns itself with inter-species relationships and biodiversity.
Lucia is part of the Kunst collective who opened a community funded artist run initiative in Byron Bay last year, providing a space for local and interstate artists to exhibit.
