All about community at Byron Community College

There’s a real buzz at the College as Term 4 moves along and the festive season approaches. We began the term by welcoming students with a pizza lunch in the courtyard, featuring pizzas from local legends Baker Daughters — the perfect way to kick off a season of learning, creativity, community and connection.
Our Youth Program has been thriving, giving young people hands-on experience, practical skills, and confidence for the future. This term, students have been busy at the Shedding Community Workshop, learning woodcraft and tool skills, and exploring The Paddock with a guided tour to see how this community garden operates and what’s involved in keeping it productive and sustainable.
The Certificate in Visual Arts students also wrapped up their course this term with a final-year exhibition, which opened to family and friends. It was a wonderful event, drawing a lovely turnout and celebrating the creativity and achievements of our students.
The Permaculture team has brought energy and creativity to the campus. Later this term, they’ll be hosting a Permablitz in the Byron Community College gardens on Gordon Street, inviting the community to help bring the garden back to life with a day of digging, planting, and teamwork.
Our Outreach Programs continue to grow, bringing learning into the wider community. Alongside a free e-bike repair workshop with Fletcher Street Cottage, the College hosted a Community Support Services Collaboration Morning Tea for 2025. The session featured a short presentation by qualified Art Therapist Tanya Whittle on using creative expression to support mental health and wellbeing. These morning tea gatherings have been a great way to foster collaboration and strengthen our network within the community support sector, helping us better understand the wide range of services available to community members.
