Susie Boag - Certificate III in Individual Support
Susie undertook the Certificate III in Individual Support with Byron Community College in 2017. Previously, she had been working as a secretary for a psychiatrist in Sydney and found she enjoyed working with people with intellectual disabilities. After relocating to Mullumbimby she came across the course at Byron College and felt it was a perfect opportunity to pursue her interest.
Susie enjoyed returning to education as an adult, particularly as it was a choice rather than an obligation. In reflecting on her time she said “the college is a really lovely place to study. Really supportive and not technical. Everyone in the class got along very well. We helped each other out and it was a very pleasant experience all around. I was a bit disappointed when the course was over”.
Susie found the aged care work experience quite challenging for her but the disability placement came very naturally to her and was a breeze. “I loved singing karaoke with the participants” Susie recalls as her face lights up. Currently Susie is waiting for a position to become available so that she can pursue her new vocation through employment in the local community.
