Introduction:

You need to be able to paint a head before you can paint a portrait! Making the head look three dimensional, solid and bathed in light, is more than just sticking facial details (eyes, nose, mouth and ears etc) together.

In a portrait, understanding and painting light and shade correctly is much more important than getting the colours right. So, we will deal with the foundational skills of tonal painting, using just black and white oil paints.

Working from traditional plaster-cast sculptures and b&w photos, you will paint convincing black and white 3D illusions of the head and improve your ability to capture the likeness and character in painting individual people’s portraits.

All materials supplied: canvas, paint, brushes, palettes, safe solvents, reference materials etc. Materials cost: $30
