Introduction:
Discover the art of carving as you learn how to select and prepare greenwood timber for small woodwork projects. We will dive into a spectrum of traditional knife grip techniques, mastering the safe use of a sloyd knife to craft your unique wooden butter knife.
Learn the secrets of applying food-safe finishes like oils, waxes, and paints, adding a personal touch to your creations. Elevate your carving skills in a journey that merges tradition with practicality.
What To Bring:
- Wear an apron to protect your clothes if you like.
- Bring own refreshments and snack/lunch if required.

Tutor Profile:
Kim Winton
Kim Winton has a Diploma of Visual Arts (Box Hill TAFE, 2000), Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in Sculpture (RMIT, 2009) and a Post Graduate Diploma of Teaching (University of Melbourne, 2010). She has over 10 years’ teaching experience, most recently as the Technology Learning Leader at a large public school and has been a contributing member of the Teacher as Practitioner (Teacher Art Maker) research project conducted by the University of Melbourne. She studied woodworking for several years across Melbourne, finding her inspiration in the design and functionality of Slöjd craft objects, Windsor chairs and Shaker-style furniture. In 2017, she moved to Canada to study at the Inside Passage School of Cabinet Making. Kim is passionate about sustainable, mindful craftsmanship. Understanding the story of the materials she works with and respecting them (where they come from and what they’re capable of doing) enables her to create elegant pieces that showcase the natural beauty of the timber, bring people joy and withstand the test of time. |
