Introduction:

'Tone does the work, colour gets the credit' is an expression often used by artists. Learn to paint beautiful watercolours by painting tone with just one colour: Black! Create beautiful effects of light and dark; develop fresh, fluid wash effects and strong dynamic pictures. Demonstrations and guided exercises will improve your skills and confidence. Become better equipped to express the beauty of colour through this workshop in black and white.

What we will cover in the course

  • Develop a series of basic tonal exercises using black watercolour paint; practise graduated washes; paint sea/sky picture
  • Identify light and dark areas of an image; paint basic forms and scenes with two tones only; paint a picture with three tones only
  • Practise and develop more watercolour images painted in three tones. Use photos as reference material and follow tutor demo paintings 'Pitching the tone': high, middle and low key. Why and when to use which key
  • Introduce wet-in-wet technique: blurred edges and merged tones
  • Bringing it all together and introduction of colour/tone exercises

Tutor Profile:

Harry Westera

As a ‘Contemporary Realist’ artist, Harry seeks to create images that express the wonderful in the ordinary. He does this through keen observation and appreciation of light falling on forms to reveal tone and colour. He teaches his students the skills to develop their own personal means of artistic expression.

Harry trained in drawing and painting at the Julian Ashton Art School and under the Tonal Impressionist portrait painter Graeme Inson. He has studied watercolour under well-known watercolourists David Taylor and Ross Paterson.

He has an honors degree in Art History and Theory, is a qualified secondary Visual Arts teacher and has conducted many Adult Education classes and workshops.
