Introduction:

Uncover the rhythmic beats of the Cajón! It appears as a wooden box, but if you learn to touch it, will transforms into a drum kit at your fingertips. This course will guide you step by step from the basic sounds to the groove and rhythm that will give you the freedom to play in any song, genre or jam session you desire.

The term 'Cajón' originally referred to a wooden box. During the 18th and 19th centuries, these boxes were used in markets to store food. However in the harbour of the major cities in South and Central America, these empty boxes were something more in the eyes of African people who had been brought to the New World during the North Atlantic slave trade.

For them, these boxes were a means of expressing their crazy polyrhythms using them as drums, this fact marked the beginning of a new era that changed the world forever.

The 'Cajón' was a step towards the path of reconciliation between African and European people in the Americas. From this fusion a world of different Afro-American music genres were born, this included genres such as the Afro-Peruvian and Afro-Cuban.

The instruments and learning material are provided so you need just to bring your self.

Tutor Profile:

Michele Salaris

Michele Salaris is a multi-instrumentalist from Nuoro Sardinia, Italy. He began his musical journey in his 20s when his first music teacher, Salvatore Faedda, introduced him to Afro-Cuban percussion. Michele became completely absorbed and wanted to learn more, he sought knowledge from every source and was introduced to many experienced musicians, but didn’t start his professional journey until he met Pavel Hernandez (a Havana Academy graduate from Pinar Del Rio Cuba) who introduced Michele to the academic way to study percussion and shared his traditional roots of the music.

Michele set out abroad to further his knowledge and experience of the music. Arriving in Australia in 2017 he had the pleasure of meeting many professional musicians along his travels and has since established his own business, teaching and sharing the traditional knowledge he has gained through intense study regimes, traditional Cuban influences and mentors.
